Breed lovers state that Shih Tzus are rather demanding dogs. Anyone considering buying a Shih Tzus should explore the breed and decide if s/he can provide the dog with necessary care. Shih Tzus are sociable dogs. They need much attention and tend to be jealous when being deprived of attention. The breed is very small. Due to their size, Shih Tzus are good for apartment living. They do not need extensive care except for grooming. Grooming is probably the major care requirement of the breed. A dog that is used solely as a pet should be brushed regularly to avoid matting and keep the coat fit. As for show dogs, brushing will not be sufficient for them. Breed novices should consult a professional groomer who will teach them the basics of grooming the Shih Tzu and give some valuable advice.
Barking is often considered one of the shortcomings of the breed. Shih Tzus sound alarm at every stimuli, which can be rather annoying to those around it. Breed lovers, however, admit that this allows the Shih Tzu to be used as a watchdog. Indeed, watchdogging is one of the breed functions. They are mainly companion dogs. Yet, Shih Tzus do well in agility and other canine sports.
