It is a universal truth that pedigree Shih Tzus have a number of advantages over non-purebred dog. Therefore, it is recommended to buy puppies from breeders who are involved in breed club activities and register their dogs with official organizations. The American Shih Tzu Club is the parent club for all breed clubs throughout the United States. All breeders and owners are supposed to follow the code of ethics developed by the club.
Thus, breeders are encouraged to promote the breed through responsible breeding. Breeding should be based on the AKC standard in mind. Puppies that are not particularly good to be bred have to be sold with a spay/neuter contract. It is also important to exclude dogs with disturbed gene pool from the breeding stock.
Information concerning the breeding of Shih Tzus can be obtained in one of the breed clubs. The American Shih Tzu Club develops guidelines for breeders to aid them in producing first class dogs. There are certain requirements concerning the sire and the dam, tests to be done prior to breeding, and registration regulations.
